Sugary Drinks Cause Gout in Women Study Says, Fructose Bad for Health...

A new study says that sugar drinks could cause gout in women. The study says that drinking too much orange juice, sodas, and other drinks with the sugar, fructose, could increase the risk of getting gout in middle-age and elderly women. Does this mean you need to skip that morning glass of OJ?

This new study, which is set for publication in the Journal of the American Medical Association's November 24th issue, says that women who drank two or more servings of sugary beverages a day more than doubled their risk of gout over those who drank the them less than once a month. Gout, which is a form of arthritis caused by abnormally high levels of uric acid in the blood stream, is pretty rare among women. There has been previous research that linked the same thing in men, who are a substantially higher risk.
Without diving into the specifics of the study, on the surface, this seems to be a problem, though there is only a small increase in cases in the United States. Does this mean we are headed for a gout epidemic with women? Probably not, though it does seem that drinking highly sugared beverages also would raise the risk of other physical issues like obesity, diabetes, etc. Still the findings of this study do suggest that the prevention of gout could be as easy as reducing fructose intake.
This is just one more reason to stop drinking so much high-fructose corn syrup.
